Bio: Ana Luísa Palhares de Miranda holds a B.S. in Pharmacy at UFRJ, a PhD in Pharmacology at the Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse (1986) and conducted post-doctoral research at the Centre de Recherche Sanofi in Toulouse (1988). Currently, she is an Associate Professor IV, Vice-Director, and Associate Director of Graduation Programs at UFRJ Pharmacy School, member of the Brazilian Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (SBFTE), member of the Brazilian Society for Chemistry (SBQ), and member of the Brazilian Association of Pharmaceutical Sciences (ABCF). Coordinator at the Laboratory of Experimental Pharmacology Studies (LEFEx), she researches Pharmacology and Development of Drugs with emphasis on Pharmacology of Inflammation, Pain, and Thrombosis, and in the areas of Biological Assays, Biological Quality Control, collaborating closely with researchers in the area of Medicinal Chemistry and Chemistry of Natural Products, coordinating projects, and tutoring students in different levels—scientific initiation, master’s and PhD. Bio: Carlos Alberto Manssour Fraga is an undergraduate pharmacist from UFRJ Pharmacy School in 1988, an M.S. (1981), and a PhD (1994) in Organic Chemistry from UFRJ Institute of Chemistry. Tenure professor at the UFRJ Institute of Biomedical Sciences, where he has been working since 1992 as faculty. He is a tutor within the Graduation Program in Chemistry at the UFRJ Institute of Chemistry and also within the Graduation Program in Biomedical Sciences at the UFRJ Institute of Biomedical Sciences, where he tutored over 50 theses and dissertations in the area of medicinal chemistry. CNPq 1A Researcher and FAPERJ Scientist of Our State, he contributed as author or inventor of more than 200 papers in international indexed journals, and 21 national and international patents in the area of pharmaceuticals. He develops his research activities in the UFRJ Laboratory of Evaluation and Synthesis of Bioactive Substances (LASSBio), working in the areas of medicinal chemistry, synthesis, and chemical-pharmaceutical technology of bioactive prototypes.

Lines of research: Planning, synthesis, and pharmacological evaluation of new prototypical multitarget-directed drug candidates for the treatment of multifactorial diseases. Special attention has been devoted to the usage of privileged structures in the architecture of molecular prototypes of painkillers, anti-inflammatories, antitumorals, psychoactives, trypanocidal drugs, and for the treatment of orphan diseases, such as the cerebral cavernous malformation, designed with the combination of different molecular modification strategies.

Bio: She is a CNPq research productivity fellowship recipient, and member of the Deliberative Committee of the Brazilian Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (SBFTE). A pharmacist, she developed her thesis at the Institute of Medical Biochemistry (UFRJ) with emphasis on vascular pharmacology, having taken her sandwich PhD also at the Université Catholique de Louvain. Her postdoctoral research was conducted at USP in a project about regulation of the endothelial nitrergic via. She is currently an Associate Professor 4 at UFRJ where she develops her Line of Research in the Laboratory of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology (ICB/UFRJ) in experimental models associated to inflammation and hyperplasia, which are generally characteristics of two chronic diseases of high prevalence: schistosomiasis and prostatic hyperplasia. On Vascular Pharmacology and Inflammation she coordinates projects investigating functional alterations of endothelial cells, mononuclear cells and vascular remodelling caused by schistosomiasis inflammation, with emphasis on the nitrergic via, oxidative stress, and P2 purinergic signalling (Diretório de Pesquisa/CNPq: Biology of the endothelial cell). The basic research project aims at elucidating the physiopathology of schistosomiasis and identifying new targets with translational potential for alternative therapeutics. Another line of research under her coordination studies the participation of adrenoceptors and EGF receptors in the physiopathology of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and more recently she initiated a project evaluating the interaction between prostatic tumoral cells and endothelial cells. This project has a potential for innovation and development of new drugs. The researcher is affiliated to the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC), SBFTE, Brazilian Club of Purines, and Graduate Women in Science. Member of the editorial team of Frontiers in Analytical and Experimental Pharmacology Journal, and reviewer at the European Journal of Pharmacology, Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, and PLoS One. She was the coordinator of the Program of Research in Pharmacology and Inflammation (ICB/UFRJ). Bio: Eliezer J. Barreiro was born in Rio de Janeiro in May 1947. He is a pharmacist (1970) by UFRJ and an M.S. in Chemistry of Natural Products also at UFRJ (1973). Docteur d´État des Sciences, Chimie Médicale at Université Scientifique et Médicale de Grenoble (1978). Tenure professor at UFRJ since 1986, at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICB). Bio: Currently, he is a PQ-2 CNPq research productivity fellowship recipient and a FAPERJ "Young Scientist from Our State" grantee. He is the adjunct coordinator in the Research Program in Pharmacology and Inflammation at UFRJ Institute of Biomedical Sciences. He works as Adjunct Professor in the Laboratory of Redox Biology (Labio RedOx), and he is also a technical advisor for the Ministry of Education (INEP). He holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences from UERJ (2005), an M.S. and a PhD both also from UERJ, and both in Biology (Nuclear Biosciences). Part of his doctoral research was conducted at PARis Cardiovascular research Center (PARCC). Conducted postdoctoral research at the Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology (UERJ), sponsored within FAPERJ postdoctoral fellowship “Grade 10”. Bio: She holds a B.S. in Pharmacology from UFRJ (1999), a PhD in Biological Sciences also from UFRJ (2004), and conducted her postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School (Boston, MA - USA - 2005-2009). She is a member of the Graduate Program in Immunology and Inflammation (IMPPG/UFRJ) Deliberative Commission, since its founding in 2012, also a member of the team of directors of the International Eosinophil Society, since 2015, and FAPERJ “Scientist from Our State” grantee from 2018 to 2021. She was coordinator of the Graduate Program in Pharmacology (2013-2014). She has got plenty of experience in mechanisms of leukocyte activation and eosinophil inflammatory response involved in allergic and anthelmintic manifestations. Her current research projects are about the studies on expression and functionality of purinergic receptors in the inflammatory response, especially in eosinophil inflammatory response. As part of another line of scientific inquiry, her objective is to characterize the expression and participation of inflammasome proteins in the activation of eosinophils in vitro and in the eosinophil inflammation in vivo. She also works investigating the signaling pathways that set the liberation of DNA traps by human eosinophils. Currently she is an Associate Professor I at UFRJ Institute of Biomedical Sciences.

Lines of research: She has as her main topic of study the mechanism of leukocyte activation in inflammatory response, researching I) the expression and the functionality of purinergic receptors in the inflammatory response, especially in the case of eosinophil inflammation; II) the characterization of the expression and participation of inflammasome proteins in the activation of eosinophils in vitro and in the eosinophil inflammation in vivo; III) the investigation of the signaling pathways that set the liberation of DNA traps by human eosinophils

Bio: He holds a B.S. in pharmacy from UFRJ, a Master’s degree in Sciences (Cell Biology) from Fiocruz, a PhD in Sciences (Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry) from UFRJ, and developed his postdoctoral research in Neuroendocrinology from Max Plank Institute of Psychiatry. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at UFRJ Institute of Biomedical Sciences. He is a permanent supervisor in the Graduate Program in Endocrinology at UFRJ Faculty of Medicine and in the Graduate Program in Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry at UFRJ Institute of Biomedical Sciences. He is an evaluator at the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira/Ministry of Education, a member of the Brazilian Society of Cell Biology, of the Latin American Thyroid Society, and of the European Society of Endocrinology. He is a FAPERJ “Young Scientist from Our State” grant recipient (2014-2017), a level-2 CNPq research productivity fellowship recipient. He researches mainly: the cell and molecular basis of hipophysarian tumors, cellular and molecular mechanisms of action of endocrine disruptors.

Bio: She holds a B.S. in Pharmacy from UFRJ Pharmacy School (1994), a Master’s degree (1997) and a PhD, both in Chemistry (Medicinal Chemistry) from UFRJ. She conducted postdoctoral research in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Navarra (UNAV, Pamplona, Spain). Currently, she is a professor at UFRJ Institute of Biomedical Sciences. She was  SBQ-Rio Regional Secretary (2010-2012) and head of UFRJ Faculty of Medicine Department of Drugs (2010-2012). She was a grant recipient within FAPERJ “Young Scientist from Our State” program and scientific superintendent of the National Institute of Science and Technology of Drugs and Medicines (INCT-INOFAR). She was the coordinator of the Program of Research and Development of Drugs at ICB-UFRJ (2014-2016), vice-coordinator at the Graduate Program in Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry (PPGFQM; ICB-UFRJ, 2014-2018) and the undergraduation in Pharmacy Adjunct Director (ICB-UFRJ, 2015-2018). She is the elected coordinator of the Graduate Program in Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry (ICB-UFRJ). She works at the Laboratory of Evaluation and Synthesis of Bioactive Substances (LASSBio, ICB, UFRJ) in many research projects in the area of Medicinal Chemistry, mainly with the following themes: new anti-inflammatory design and synthesis; new chemotherapeutic drug candidates (emphasis on antichagasic, leishmanicidal, and antineoplastics) and oral hypoglycemic drugs; optimization of lead-compound; study of drug-likeness properties and xenobiotic metabolism.

Lines of research: Design, synthesis, and biologic evaluation of new anticancer drug prototypes, but also antidiabetes, leishmanicidal, and anti-inflammatory drugs. Studies both in silico and in vitro of phases 1 and 2 metabolism of new drug candidates.

Bio: She holds a B.S. in Pharmacy (1999), a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences - Physiology (2000), and a PhD in Biological Sciences - Physiology (2004), all from UFRJ. Currently, she is an Associate Professor at UFRJ Institute of Biomedical Sciences. She was a FAPERJ “Young Scientist from Our State” recipient (2013), a level-2 CNPq researcher (2013). She is also a member of the American Physiological Society (APS, 2009), an affiliate member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (2013), and a member of Brazilian Society of Nephrology (2014). Lead researcher at the Laboratory of Renal Pharmacology, which was founded on March 2015. She was a visiting professor at Tulane University (2010-2011), lecturing analyses of clinic studies to medical students and received the Young Investigator prize from the American Physiological Society (2011). She’s got experience in the areas of Physiology and Pharmacology, with emphasis on the cardiorenal system. Her main research topic has been the phenomena of regulation in transport of Na+ and Ca2+ in biological membranes in physiological and pathological conditions. More recently, her lab started researching mechanisms associated with endoplasmic reticulum stress related to renal lesion and to intracellular signaling activated by extracellular Na+.

Bio: He holds a B.S. in Pharmacy (1992), a Master’s degree in Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutic (1996), and a PhD in Biophysics (2002) all from UFRJ. He took his doctoral internship at the Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium, 1997) and his postdoctoral research at the University of Toledo/Medical University of Ohio (USA, 2006-2007). He researches in the area of Biochemical and Molecular Pharmacology, coordinating research projects on the regulation of ion-transporting ATPases, in particular the Na/K-ATPase, and the modulation of new intracellular signaling pathways induced by cardiotonic steroids, besides the pharmacological characterization of new drug candidates. He is an Associate Professor in Pharmacology at UFRJ Institute of Biomedical Sciences, and a permanent professor in the Graduate Program in Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry. He is a member of various scientific journal editorial teams and also a peer reviewer. He is PLOS ONE academic editor.

Bio: She holds a B.S. with a Teaching degree in Chemistry from UERJ, Master’s, and PhD both in Chemistry in the area of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance from the Brazilian Institute of Military Engineering (IME). She developed her postdoctoral research at UFRJ Institute of Medical Biochemistry in the area of NMR proteins and senior internship at the University of California in Riverside in the area of metabolomics. She is currently a level-3 Associate Professor at UFRJ and director of the Institute of Research on Natural Products (IPPN). She is a permanent professor of the Graduate Programs in Chemistry of Natural Products (IPPN-UFRJ) and in Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry (ICB-UFRJ), also being a member of the Research Program on Development of Drugs (ICB-UFRJ). She was responsible for the installation of the Multi-use Laboratory of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Analysis (LAMAR) in IPPN, being its coordinator until now. Her research interests consist in the identification, quantification, and structural determination of natural products in vegetal extracts using NMR, studies on intermolecular interactions and the structural determination of peptides and proteins using NMR. She also coordinates the Laboratory of Analysis of the Development of Enzymatic Inhibitors (LADIE), where research projects on the application of NMR in the studies of intermolecular interactions for the planning of drugs, which includes the quest for inhibitors for plasmin enzymes in Yersinia pestis, nucleoside hydrolases (Leishmania), and acetylcholinesterase. She collaborated with many research groups from UFRJ and other universities form Brazil and abroad, mainly with the groups at the Universidad de la República in Uruguay and at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

Bio: He holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences from the Federal University of Ceará (1981), a Master’s degree in Biology (Nuclear Biosciences) from UERJ (1984), and a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Fiocruz (1991). He developed his postdoctoral research at the William Harvey Institute (1996-1997) and at the Imperial College (1997-1998), London. Tenure researcher at Fiocruz and level 1A CNPq researcher. He leads the Laboratory of Inflammation at Fiocruz since 1991. He researches the area of the pharmacology of the inflammatory process, about which he developed prospective and preclinical studies of both natural and synthetic substances for the treatment of pulmonary inflammatory disorders, such as asthma, silicosis, and COPD. He has published 168 papers in indexed journals, supervised 14 Master’s degree dissertations, 15 PhD theses, and 9 postdoctoral research projects. He is the editor in the pharmacology area of the Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, and a member of the editorial team of Frontiers in Pharmacology.

Bio: He is an Associate Professor at UFRJ, where he is also the head of the Laboratory of Molecular Pharmacology. He went to Medical School and then took a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering (COPPE-UFRJ). His PhD in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) was taken both at UFRJ, as primary institution, and in the University of Maryland (USA), where he acted as a Postdoctoral Fellow. He’s got experience in the areas of neuroscience, biophysics, and pharmacology, with emphasis on molecular neuropharmacology and electrophysiological methods, with interest in the research of synaptic receptors and ion pathways (nicotinics, GABA, glutamate) and in the development of drugs for neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. Bio: She is a CNPq research productivity fellowship recipient and a FAPERJ “Scientist form Our State'' grantee. Between 2014 and 2016 she was vice-secretary of the regional division of the Brazilian Society of Chemistry (SBQ-Rio). In 2007 she was deputy municipal secretary of health of the city of Niterói, in Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area. She holds a B.S. in Pharmacy from UFRJ Pharmacy School, a Master’s degree in organic synthesis from UFRJ Nucleus of Research on Natural Products, PhD in chemistry from the UFRJ Institute of Chemistry (IQ-UFRJ), with doctoral stay at the University of York, England. She conducted her postdoctoral research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She is a permanent supervisor of the Graduation Program in Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry (ICB-UFRJ). She is a senior technology technician at Fiocruz, and since 1986 has been working in different positions, including Farmanguinhos executive director. She is currently Farmanguinhos vice-director of education, research, and innovation, coordinating several projects, among them the implementation of the National Reference Center in Drug Synthesis (CRSF), that will be installed in UFRJ Technology Park. She leads one of the most important R&D groups in drug synthesis in the state, aiming at the public production of drugs and medicines. Numerous total synthesis of important pharmaceuticals for public health have been designed in this laboratory, while transfering technology to the national pharmaco-chemical industrial sector. In the field of innovation, her main focus is R&D&I on drugs. She is experienced in the chemistry of organofluorines and in the chemistry of heterocycles, with emphasis on medicinal chemistry. Hundreds of new molecules have been synthetized for neglected diseases, AIDS, and cancer, also generating powerful antimalarials, antimycobacterials, antichagasics, antiretrovirals, and antileukemics. All described throughout 106 highly-impacting scientific papers and 45 registered patents. During her 33 year-long Fiocruz scientist career, she has devoted herself to increase patients access to medication within the Brazilian National Public Health System (SUS).

Bio: She holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences (medical modality, Biomedicine) from UNIRIO (1987), a Master’s degree (1990), and a PhD (1996) in Biological Chemistry, within the Graduate Program in Biological Chemistry (IBQMed) in UFRJ. She conducted her postdoctoral research in immunopharmacology at the University of São Paulo Department of Immunology (ICB, USP), from 2003 to 2005. She is a tenure professor at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, from UFRJ. She is a CNPq 1D researcher and a FAPERJ “Scientist from Out State” fellowship recipient. She is the lead researcher at the Laboratory of Pharmacology of Pain and Inflammation (LaFDI), where she coordinates a myriad of research efforts on the quest for new drugs originated from natural or synthetic products that can become candidates to pharmaceutical prototypes in preclinical studies in the areas of inflammation, analgesia, and cancer, using for such, models of acute and chronic diseases. She is coordinator of the Graduate Program in Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry (ICB/UFRJ), editor of the Journal of Ethnopharmacology. She has over 90 published papers in indexed journals and 4 registered patents. She  has already supervised 20 Master’s degree dissertations, 8 PhD theses, and 5 postdoctoral research projects. Currently, she is a Fiocruz Researcher of Public Health (Level III) in the institution’s Laboratory of Inflammation. She is also a CNPq 1B researcher and a FAPERJ “Scientist from Our State” grant recipient. She is an ad-hoc consultant for national and international funding agencies, being currently a member of the CNPq CA-BF and a FAPERJ Area Coordinator. She coordinates the Technical Chamber of Teaching (Câmara Técnica de Ensino do IOC) (2013 - 2017). She is a member of many scientific societies such as the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science, a member of the board of the Brazilian Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, and a Fellowship of the British Pharmacological Society. She participated in the project TIMER from the European Union. She is an invited reviewer of many scientific publications and a member of the editorial teams of Fibrogenesis and Tissue Repair and of The British Journal of Pharmacology. She published around 148 papers in indexed journals and 7 book chapters. She supervised 30 Master’s degree dissertations, 16 PhD theses, and 10 postdoctoral projects, besides more than 50 undergraduate students having been tutored within the scientific initiation program. She is experienced in the area of pharmacology, with emphasis on Biochemical and Molecular Pharmacology, working mainly with the inflammatory component of chronic pulmonary diseases, both of immunological kind and otherwise, aiming at the identification of new therapies focused on controlling these physiopathologies.

Bio: He holds a Medical degree from the Medical School of Campos (1976), his medical residency was in Anesthesiology at UERJ (1978), Specialization (1978), Master’s degree in Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics from UFRJ (1983), a PhD in Biological Sciences with emphasis on Biophysics from UFRJ (1992), and postdoctoral research with CNPq scholarship in Oklahoma State University, OK, USA (1995-1996). Tenure professor at UFRJ - Campus of Macaé, CNPq “IC” researcher, and FAPERJ “Scientist from Our State” grant recipient. He has experience in Clinical Anesthesiology, Intensive Therapy, teaching of Physiology & Pharmacology. He works both in undergraduation and in the Graduation Program in Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry. His research projects are mainly about: development of new drugs and experimental models (Pancreatitis), venom pharmacology (toxinology), studies of toxin antagonists in animals and plants; use of natural cytotoxic polycations coming from venom for the development of drugs and newly-designed anticytotoxic substances; investigation on the natural and synthetic polyanions; substances present in plants or synthetic derivatives with anticytotoxic properties and enzyme inhibitors.

Bio: He holds a B.S. in Physiotherapy from University Gama Filho (1997-2000), an M.S. in Morphology from UERJ (2001-2002), a PhD from the University of Utah (2013-2014). He is currently an associate professor at UFRJ, participating actively in the Graduate Program in Histology and in the Research Program on Pharmacology and Inflammation from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences. He is a technical advisor to the Ministry of Education (INEP). He has experience in topics related to oxidative stress, inflammation, tissue repair, and extracellular matrix.
