Course load: 45 hours – 3 credits

Course program: Didactic training of students under the supervision of the teacher in charge and the student's advisor.  Students must participate in seminars and practical classes offered to undergraduate students and must prepare and teach a theoretical class under the supervision of the faculty of the pharmacology program on a topic chosen by the coordinator.  The evaluation is carried out by a committee of professors from the PPGFQM.

Course load: 45 hours – 3 credits

Course program: The student must present seminars on scientific articles, as well as on personal experimental data, being guided by different course professors and judged by the professors present.

Course Description: Didactic Training of Doctoral students who must, under the guidance and supervision of the professor in charge and the advisor, prepare and teach theoretical classes and participate in seminars and practical classes in the classroom applied regularly to the undergraduate disciplines in the pharmacology of courses (Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing, Nutrition, Psychology, Biological Sciences – Medical Modality), offered by UFRJ. The evaluation will include the analysis of the professor responsible for the course and a poll of the students.

Course program: The course aims to guide and prepare graduate students (master's and doctoral level) to give a short 10-minute oral presentation in English. The lecture must have scientific rigor and may be about the student's research topic or about a subject of interest. In addition to the short lecture, students will be encouraged to communicate with each other and with the teacher (tutor) in English during face-to-face meetings.

Course program: Methodology for the research of substances with action potential in the heart and vessels. Langendorff technique, isolated papillary muscle, isometric tension in artery and vein, in vivo blood pressure and electrocardiogram recording, skinned fiber, and current recording.

Course program: Testing of substances with anticonvulsant, sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic, and anesthetic activity. Learning and memory investigation method. Electrophysiological methods are applied to research the activity of cells located in the central nervous system.

BMF-733 – NMR in Drug Analysis and Planning

Course program: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance is one of the techniques most used by chemists for structural elucidation. Its advancement in terms of equipment and pulse sequences has allowed its application to be disseminated in others such as Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, Internal Medicine, and Microbiology, among others. This discipline will promote the basic training necessary for the student to understand the operation of the technique and its most modern applications, giving him the opportunity to understand experiments and future applications that will allow him to always expand his knowledge in order to interact with the various areas of application.

Course program: Study of pharmacological receptors through the binding of radioactive molecules. Equilibrium study (direct and competition) and association and dissociation kinetics. Multiple receptors, positive and negative cooperativity. Theoretical aspects and practical considerations. Practical demonstration with computerized analysis of the results. Non-linear regression. Binding assays for screening new molecules.

BMF749 - Drug Discovery and Development Process
Course load: 30 hours – 2 credits
Course program: The aim of this course is to provide playful and interactive learning about the long and costly process that leads to the commercialization of new drugs, with particular emphasis on the different stages of the discovery phase and the pre-clinical phase.  With this, it is expected that at the end of the game, the students will have learned the different tasks to be performed, for each of the steps that constitute the drug discovery and development phases, within the regulatory framework.  It is also expected that players have learned or improved their knowledge regarding the practical aspects of different types of essays as well as the terminology used in this multidisciplinary area. The discipline uses the SCREENER educational game as a tool, a board game specially developed for this purpose and endorsed by the SBFTE.

BMF-793 – Pharmacology of Toxins and Antagonists
Course load: 15 hours – 1 credit
Course program: The discipline introduces within pharmacology the concept of toxicology and the use of toxins or venoms from animals and plants investigated in models of cell injury in vitro or in vivo. It aims to make students aware of the venoms of the main venomous snakes of clinical importance, and the manifestations of poisoning by scorpions, spiders, and bees. It addresses the toxicity and different reactions of these processes, as well as the different substances that, together with antivenom serums, can prevent the effects of these toxic agents.  In this subject, the student has the opportunity to study complex venoms with enzymatic activities (phospholipase, proteolytic, hyaluronidase, and collagenase activities) and inhibition by natural or synthetic substances. Reinforces the use of toxins as tools in the development of new drugs, whether from natural products or planned molecules that characterize the interaction of pharmacology and medicinal chemistry. We use international reference articles in toxicology/pharmacology and we also have practical bench experiments.

Course program: Mechanisms of Ca+2 transport through the sarcolemma. Ryanodine receptor on the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Transport of Ca+2 by the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SERCA). IP3 receiver. Diseases that affect intracellular Ca2+ regulation.

 

BMF808 – Doctoral Thesis Research

Course program: Individual research work under the supervision of the academic advisor. Compulsory chair for students with credits from subjects already completed and who intend to present the thesis to obtain a Doctorate Diploma.
